What to expect
Peter is a social and humorous personality who enjoys the company of people. Lessons are light-hearted. Simple to understand advice is given to advance the quality of work. Peter prefers to allow the natural character of the individual to come through their work rather than create copies of his own style and the student is encouraged to relax and grow in confidence because this is the key to becoming a good painter. He will only jump in if the student needs his input.
Peter's natural style is an impressionist/realist almost photo realism. The subject of much of his work is nature and the natural world. However, he has touched on many other genres, subjects and styles within his many years as a professional artist. He can guide you in any subject and any style from abstract through to photo-realism and everything in between. The choice is yours.
The structure of his classes is open and hands on in nature. Many students can't believe how difficult aspects of painting become so easy for them so quickly. This is because he explains so simply and there is no hiding those special techniques and tips that an artist develops over his lengthy career in art which is 45 years as of 2023. Peter shares freely.
The emphasis in Peter's teaching is on brush technique, colour and composition, but really it's about painting a pleasing piece and something the student can be proud of. Once the student understands the three key elements then it's a matter of workshopping to hone up their skills in areas such as artistic decision making within the painting and improving drafting and execution. Should the student struggle Peter will correct the work so every piece ends up a success. Students learn by example of his interventions along the way.
